Is Le Mans Ultimate Worth It In 2025?

Although a release date wasn’t proffered, it marks an important milestone for LMU as it shows that other ACO-affiliated series (Automobile Club de l'Ouest, the organising body behind WEC and Le Mans) can be included in the game, potentially leading to more cars and tracks in future.

Many believe this could mean a future tie-in with IMSA and its glut of incredible tracks, including Road Atlanta, Road America and Virginia International Raceway. A single-player career mode is also on the agenda, but not until the first quarter of 2026.

How Good is Le Mans Ultimate in VR?

Solid virtual reality headset compatibility has almost become a prerequisite for racing sims these days, and thankfully, LMU ranks highly in terms of its VR performance.

The sim didn’t officially support VR in its initial build, but has undergone subsequent updates to improve its performance and optimisation, and it’s now a native launch option in Steam.

Players can expect LMU’s VR experience to improve further in future, too, as VR hardware manufacturer Pimax invested $2.5 million in Motorsport Games to help prop up the future of the business and its hit game.

Pimax’s expertise is sure to push the in-headset performance of LMU further, with the Chinese company likely using the LMU’s promotional clout to boost hardware sales.

Le Mans Ultimate’s Multiplayer Community

Online multiplayer is where LMU has really captured the imagination of the sim racing community, with the game’s proprietary matchmaking system, RaceControl, providing evenly matched racing.

RaceControl monitors drivers’ Safety Rank (SR) and Driver Rank (DR) using an ELO algorithm, with a blend of official daily, weekly and monthly races, plus special events.

However, after the release of LMU’s December 2024 update, hosted servers were implemented, allowing players and sim racing platforms like SimGrid to host their own races.

Likewise, LMU introduced subscription-based services that gave players more online racing functionality, with RaceControl Pro and RaceControl Pro+ schemes unlocking more official online, multi-round, multi-season championships. RaceControl Pro+ also offers players free access to all of LMU and rFactor’s DLC packs for as long as the subscription is active.

These subscriptions have gained more features since the game’s June 2025 update, too, giving players the ability to create up to 10 teams consisting of up to 100 drivers.

Players can assign roles like engineer to their roster of drivers, also unlocking livery management tools for their teams (drivers who don’t have a RaceControl Pro subscription, but whose team owner does, will be allowed to use the team’s custom livery).

What’s Missing from Le Mans Ultimate in 2025

As described earlier, LMU is still missing a couple of key features in 2025. Most notably, it doesn’t have a single-player career mode (and won’t until 2026). Driver swap and custom livery usage are also only available in a limited capacity, with advanced team management features and custom livery controls requiring a RaceControl Pro or RaceControl Pro+ subscription.

So, if any of these features are vital to your enjoyment of a racing game, it may be worth delaying your purchase for now.

Is Le Mans Ultimate Worth it in 2025?

Le Mans Ultimate is currently £28.99 for the base game, with a Season Pass selling for £39.99, which includes five DLC packs to complete the 2023-24 WEC seasons.

RaceControl Pro and RaceControl Pro+ subscriptions equate to roughly £35 and £62 per annum respectively, meaning LMU can be potentially quite expensive if players buy the game’s optional content.

On the other hand, the game’s default content, which includes free DLC like the BMW M Hybrid V8 Hypercar, McLaren 720S LMGT3 Evo and Ford Mustang LMGT3, allows all LMU players to participate in online races in any of the game’s vehicle categories.

However, circuits like Imola, the Circuit of the Americas, Interlagos and the Lusail International Circuit are in paid-for DLC packs, potentially excluding players from some online races.

As a driving experience, though, LMU does a lot of things well: its physics are highly-regarded, its graphics and audio are among the best in the genre and it has a burgeoning multiplayer community.

LMU also has a single-player career mode to look forward to as well, with ELMS DLC and free 2025 WEC content on the way too.

With Motorsport Games seemingly in a more secure position financially, it feels like Le Mans Ultimate will be worthy of any sim racer’s time in 2025 and beyond.
